Black River- Matheson offers a variety of small town living experiences that create memories that will last a lifetime.
We encourage visitors to picnic and swim at our boat launch, or take a swim at one of our many other beaches. Fishing in the Black River or from one of our many local area lakes is excellent. Hunting for small game such as partridge, ducks or geese or big game such as moose or bear is among the best in Northern Ontario.
Take a canoe ride on the Black River or enjoy a traffic free drive in the country; visit our local area rapids, or stop in to take pictures of the buffalo. Take a tour at the Thelma Miles Museum or curl up with a book from our Public Libraries. Join us during Val Gagne Days, The Country Western Festival Competition or Fall Fair (Labour Day) weekend. Our July 1st Canada Day Fireworks display is on par with those in some of our largest cities! Our sunsets over the river are breathtaking and worth taking the time to enjoy.
During the winter, ride the kilometers of groomed snowmobile trails; cross country ski on our nature trail; snowshoe over a field; skate under the stars at an outdoor rink or join us at the arena for pick-up hockey. Register for one of the recreational programs offered including yoga, walking groups, figure skating, hockey or curling for all ages. Ice fishing is a great winter sport on the river or on a near-by lake.
Travelers are encouraged to contact our tourist information center during the summer months at 705-363-7699 or visit the center located within the Ontario Northland Railway Station on Railway Street in Matheson.
